You do not need Health Insurance to be seen in the SHC as there is no visit charge for full-time, registered students regardless whether they live on or off campus. We do have small charges for testing, vaccinations and prescriptions that can be paid for with EagleOne or billed to your student account. We do not accept cash or credit cards nor do we bill health insurance for any services.
However, because the SHC is limited in scope and cannot provide all your medical care, we strongly encourage, but do not require, all students to have health insurance coverage for laboratory testing, x-rays, emergency room visits, hospitalizations, and specialist visits. If you have coverage, please make sure that it can be used in the Fredericksburg area.
For many years, UMW has sponsored a Student Health Insurance option providing affordable, short-term, health insurance when other options were not available. With the passage of the Affordable Care Act, the insurance industry has changed. To accommodate these changes we have decided to partner with BB&T Insurance Services to offer you the flexibility of a health insurance market place.
If you currently have coverage through Academic Health Plans, that coverage ends on July 31, 2014 and will not be renewable. However, we have several options available to you through BB&T and its partner, American Exchange. Note that if you maintain coverage on a policy issued outside of Fredericksburg, VA, it is important that you verify whether the plan requires you to utilize participating providers for the highest level of benefits and whether a network of participating providers exist in the Fredericksburg area.
A) You can enroll/continue on your parent’s health insurance plan until age 26.
B) You can access coverage through the Health Insurance Marketplace (i.e., the Public Exchange) and may qualify for a subsidy offered through the Federal Government. American Exchange can assist you with enrolling in the Health Insurance Marketplace and in obtaining any subsidy for which you are eligible.
C) You can utilize BB&T Insurance Services and American Exchange to purchase short term medical coverage on an individual basis. To contact American Exchange directly, call 1-888-995-1674 and press 1 to speak with a licensed agent. Please identify yourself as a UMW student needing assistance with determining your best options for obtaining insurance coverage.
D) Another private health exchange with access to more than 300 health carriers is Edusure by Academic Health Plans. You may call Edusure at 1-800-EDU-EXCHANGE or enroll online.
We take student health seriously at UMW and we are committed to supporting your health needs. Health insurance is an important part of your ability to have a successful experience at UMW, and we look forward to helping you achieve success.
