Chapter 5: Initial and Periodic Cleaning
The initial cleaning of contaminated areas, as well as, all future cleaning should be performed by persons trained and equipped to deal with asbestos contamination. This should be done before the initiation of any response action.
Specialized cleaning procedures should be used to conduct these cleaning activities. Initial cleaning procedures will include a combination of wet mopping, wet wiping and HEPA vacuuming of all potentially contaminated surfaces within the building. Steam cleaning of carpets may also be involved. These wet methods should be performed using amended water as the wetting agent. Use of respirators by the cleaning personnel is recommended during the initial cleaning procedures. Periodic cleaning should be performed as required to prevent accumulation of debris.
All material and waste water used in the cleaning activities shall be disposed of as asbestos contaminated waste.
