Chapter 2: Asbestos Training

Training for custodial and maintenance workers is a very important aspect of an effective O&M plan. All personnel who work in a building which contains asbestos should attend a two hour awareness training program. This training is mandatory for custodial and maintenance personnel who will come in direct contact with friable asbestos. The custodial and maintenance staff who will conduct activities which might disturb friable asbestos are required to have an additional fourteen (14) hours of training.

The maintenance workers that will be directly involved with repair and or cleaning of disturbed ACM should have a more extensive training program which should include a respiratory protection program, medical surveillance program, and a program in specialized cleaning procedures. The maintenance and custodial personnel trained in this manner may deal with occurrences of less than three square feet.
