What Happens in Counseling?
Counseling is a type of learning…about oneself, one’s feelings, and one’s relationships with others. As in any learning environment, students will benefit most if they participate actively, attend sessions on time and are open and honest with the counselor.
The student’s concerns will be listened to by the counselor, who will help them set and achieve suitable goals while also respecting their confidentiality. Our staff abides by the ethical principles of the American Psychological Association the American Counseling Association, the American Association of Social Workers, and the American College Counseling Association. Students can expect to have services delivered in a professional, legal and ethical manner.
In the initial two sessions (triage and intake), the counselor will collect fundamental details about the student’s concerns, general well-being, daily routine, objectives for treatment, and other relevant background information. Throughout the counseling process, the student and counselor will collaborate. In addition to traditional counseling sessions, students are frequently advised to experiment with new behaviors, utilize books and other resources to enhance their comprehension and coping skills, and utilize other campus and community resources as needed. The “homework” assigned between sessions is often just as crucial as the conversations that take place during the sessions!
We work with students from a holistic perspective; this means that we consider emotions, behavior, health, relationships, attitudes and frames of reference and meaning. We attend to student resources and strengths, as well as to concerns or issues.
Participating in counseling is an individual decision. We urge every student to engage in discussions with their counselor about any questions regarding their progress, the therapy procedure, the policies and protocols of the counseling center, and similar topics. If a student’s concerns necessitate interventions beyond the scope of our services, the counselor will provide recommendations for other resources available on campus and in the community.
