Do you love being outdoors, hiking, and camping? Want the opportunity to meet other UMW students before the semester starts? Then it sounds like SOAR is for you! In addition to the mandatory summer orientation program, the optional SOAR experience is designed to give you an opportunity to build social connections with other trip members and introduce you to the amazing local natural areas surrounding Fredericksburg. These trips are not only fun, but are also a great way for incoming students to meet other first-years and learn about UMW from upperclass students.
UMW’s Summer Orientation Adventure Retreats (SOAR) is a two night, three day primitive camping experience that takes place after the mandatory summer Orientation session. You’ll stay on UMW owned property, Eagle Lake Outpost, which has a beautiful lake great for boating and fishing. You’ll choose between multiple activities (like campsite set-up, team building experiences, bracelet-making, rock painting, canoeing, fishing, hiking, etc.) and end the trip by tubing down the Rappahannock River. Both trips involve primitive camping (no showers) and do not require any previous camping experience. If you’re curious what to pack, see this sample packing list!
Campus Recreation is offering two SOAR trips in summer 2019:
- The first SOAR runs from June 11-13.
- It is recommended that you register for Orientation Session 1: June 10-11.
