Summer Orientation Adventure Retreat (SOAR)
Do you love being outdoors, hiking, and camping? Do you want the opportunity to meet other UMW students? Then it sounds like SOAR is for you! In addition to the mandatory summer orientation program, the optional SOAR experience is designed to give you an opportunity to build social connections with other trip members and introduce you to the amazing local natural areas surrounding Fredericksburg. These trips are not only fun, but are also a great way for students to meet other class mates and learn about UMW from upperclass students.
UMW’s Summer Orientation Adventure Retreats (SOAR) is a two night, three day primitive camping experience that takes place after the mandatory summer Orientation session. You’ll stay on UMW owned property, Eagle Lake Outpost, which has a beautiful lake great for boating and fishing. You’ll choose between multiple activities (like campsite set-up, team building experiences, bracelet-making, rock painting, canoeing, fishing, hiking, etc.). Both trips involve primitive camping (no showers) and do not require any previous camping experience. If you’re curious what to pack, see this sample packing list!
