Fitness Class Descriptions

Beginner exercisers, athletes, and all those in between are invited to try any of our fitness classes! After trying a few, you are bound to find the instructors and class formats that make you enjoy exercising and help you work towards your health and fitness goals. Don’t be afraid to try something new!

A rewarding workout inspired by ballet, yoga, and pilates moves that uses bodyweight exercises, the ballet barre, and light dumbbells to tone muscles and improve flexibility. It’s a great workout with great music!

Cardio Intervals
A beginner friendly fitness class that will incorporate a variety of moves that get your heart rate up. Each move is timed and performed in intervals, so do the best you can and enjoy the mental benefits of cardio movement!

Core Barre
This class takes your traditional barre workout and utilizes more movements that strengthen on the core.

Core & More
A workout designed to work your entire core: from your back to your abs and glutes. This class utilizes bodyweight movements and dumbbells to give you a great workout while jamming to pop music.

An upbeat cardiovascular workout on a stationary bike. You will sprint, climb mountains, and more, all to fun and energizing music from all kinds of genres! We have 12 bikes in our Cycle Studio, so register ahead of time & arrive to class early!

Cycle UP
An upbeat cardiovascular workout on a stationary bike where a majority of the class is spent standing up out of the saddle. You will tap back, sprint, climb, and more, all to fun and energizing music from all kinds of genres! We have 12 bikes in our Cycle Studio, so register ahead of time & arrive to class early!

Dance Fitness
A beginner-friendly pre-choreographed cardio dance class. In our Dance Fitness classes, you’re encouraged to forget what you look like and just MOVE! Our instructors will lead you through the movements. You can expect to move and groove to pop, hip hop, and electronic dance music.

Fitness Happy Hour
A free fitness class every Friday at 5:30pm. It may be a cycle & abs class one week and a partner yoga class the next week. Look forward to a new class format & instructor each week, announced on our Instagram, Facebook & Twitter: @UMWCampusRec. The classes are first come, first served.

A full-body stretching class meant for those who want to improve their flexibility. You don’t need to be flexible to start working on it! Spend 45 minutes stretching with a fitness instructor who can explain how to get the most out of each movement. This class has less poses and mindfulness practices than a traditional yoga class.

HIIT & Core
A full-body workout that includes a warm up, 25 minutes of HIIT, 10 minutes of core work, and a cool down. HIIT = High Intensity Interval Training, so expect to do a variety of full body cardio and strength exercises for short amounts of time, with rest time between moves. You’ll slow down once you reach the core portion of class, but prepare to strengthen and challenges your abs, obliques, back, shoulders and glutes.

HIIT Strength
A low impact dumbbell workout to strengthen your entire body! The strength movements are taught to upbeat music so that you can challenge your muscle endurance and stay motivated. You will work each of the major muscle groups in this class – legs, arms, chest, core, and more! This class is great for beginners and can be adapted for experienced exercisers by increasing the weight of your dumbbells.

Lower Body HIIT
This class uses the power of interval training to strengthen your quads, hamstrings, calves and glutes.

A low impact workout that improves flexibility, builds strength and develops control and endurance in the entire body. It puts emphasis on alignment, breathing, developing a strong core, and improving coordination and balance.

A full-body workout with a focus on the core that uses weighted drumsticks to strengthen your muscles and improve cardiovascular endurance. This class is loud, modifiable, and involves beating the drumsticks to various kinds of beats. Don’t worry, the drumsticks are provided!

Relaxation Yoga
A time to stretch and unwind before the weekend. In this class you will take it easy, performing beginner poses and stretches.

SHiNE Dance Fitness
A high-energy dance experience that will leave you smiling and feeling sassy! Shine Dance Fitness is a dance workout for those who love moving and want to have fun while working out. It is a more technical dance workout where you will learn steps to routines for diverse dance styles and then follow the instructor through the movements week after week. SHiNE Dance Fitness is only taught by certified SHiNE instructors.

Total Body Burn
A class that focuses on total body strengthening with a bit of cardio. It’s the full body workout you’ve been looking for!

Yoga (Beginner, Intermediate)
A rewarding class that works on strength and flexibility of the mind and body through a series of traditional poses. Our beginner-level Yoga classes are designed for those who feel stiff and inflexible – a relaxing blend of flexibility training and muscle strengthening. All yoga classes at UMW include both simple and advanced modifications for the various poses.

A beginner-friendly pre-choreographed cardio dance class with a focus on at least 75% international beats and movements. In our Zumba® classes, you’re encouraged to forget what you look like and just MOVE! Our instructors will lead you through the movements. Zumba classes are taught by those who hold a Zumba® instructor license.
