Fitness Classes

The group fitness program provides a variety of fitness classes for the UMW community, including yoga, cycle, dance fitness classes, pilates, strength, and more. Our instructors guide you through safe and enjoyable workouts and all equipment is provided. All classes are modifiable for beginner exercisers, but some classes are more designed to challenge a frequent exerciser. Each class serves as an opportunity to improve your flexibility, strength, or endurance and tend to your emotional wellness.

How does Instagram Live work? Participants can not be seen, but our instructors are on screen demonstrating and leading the workouts. There is also a chat feature that allows participants to communicate with one another or send *hearts* to the instructor (on water breaks only, of course) and it can let the instructor know you are there! Please note: summer online fitness classes are currently free and the summer schedule changes each month. In-person fitness classes are not being offered at this time as the UMW fitness center remains closed until further notice. (Updated August 4, 2020)


How do UMW Fitness Classes Work?

In a traditional semester, an annual ‘Group Fitness Pass’ is required to attend our fitness classes, except for during Free Weeks of Fitness (the first week of classes, mid-semester (normally after the semester break), and final exam week). The Group Fitness Pass is $10 and lasts all academic year. Another option is to pay per class at a $5 drop-in fee per class, paid at the front desk. We provide the instructor, music, space, and equipment. All you need to do is arrive early, check-in with your EagleONE ID, and bring water! Our classes are fun and vary in format. As a UMW fitness class participant, we ask that you read and understand the following rules:

  • Participants must check in at the front desk of the Fitness Center prior to attending any fitness class.
  • Participants must tell the front desk staff what class they are attending to obtain the physical Fitness Class card which is to be handed to a staff member or instructor in the room where the fitness class is being held.
  • Participants must be a “Fitness Pass” holder to attend fitness classes at UMW, besides during “Free Weeks”.
  • Participants must wear appropriate attire, complete with closed-toe athletic shoes, athletic bottoms, and a shirt.
  • Participant must be present for the warm up in order to attend the class. Participants arriving to a class more than 5 minutes late, or after the warm up has ended, will not be admitted into the class as it is unsafe to exercise without properly warmed muscles, gradual heart rate increase, and proper pre-class instructions from the instructor.
  • Participants are advised not to enter a group fitness room if the door is closed as the class has begun as opening the door can be distracting.
  • Participants who pre-register for a class online and do not show up to more than two classes without canceling their online registration will be contacted by a Campus Recreation professional staff member.
  • Participant reservations are only saved in a fitness class until the time the class starts. If participants are not checked-in by the class start time, the spot is released and will be filled by a patron on the wait list.

How to Purchase Your Fitness Pass

Please note: Online transactions incur a 2.75% processing fee. You may also purchase in person at the Fitness Center when the facility is open.

1. Go to campusrec.umw.edu
2. Click “Log In” in the top right corner of the webpage.
3. Click the top button that says “UMW Net ID and Password” if you are a student, employee, or recent alumni, or “Community Members” if you don’t have a UMW log-in.
4. Enter your UMW username and password. (UMW students: You automatically have a Campus Rec account once your UMW email is set up.)
5. Once you’re logged in, on the home page, click the “Memberships and Passes” icon.
6. Select the fitness pass for the year you intend to use it.
7. Follow the steps to make your payment. Please note that you will be taken to an external site to make your payment. You must submit your payment and continue moving through the steps until you see a Successful Payment Confirmation page.


How to Pre-Register or Cancel a Registration for a Class

If you wish to save your spot in a fitness class, you can! Here’s the catch – you MUST show up as space is limited, especially in our cycle classes. If you realize you can no longer come to a class you registered online for, please CANCEL your online registration. Instructions for cancelling your registration are below.

**Please note: Your spot is only reserved until the time the class starts. If you are not checked in by the class start time, your spot is released and may be filled by a patron on the wait list.

TO PRE-REGISTER FOR A CLASS:
24 hours in advance, you can claim your spot in an in-person fitness class.
1. Go to campusrec.umw.edu
2. Click “Log In” in the top right corner of the webpage.
3. Click the top button that says “UMW Net ID and Password” if you are a student, employee, or recent alumni, or “Community Members” if you don’t have a UMW log-in.
4. Enter your UMW username and password. (UMW students: You automatically have a Campus Rec account once your UMW email is set up.)
5. Once you’re logged in, on the home page, click the “Group Fitness” icon.
6. Select the name of the class you’d like to register for.
7. Follow the prompts.

TO CANCEL YOUR REGISTRATION:
If you know you can no longer make a class, we ask that you surrender your spot in the class as soon as possible.
1. Go to campusrec.umw.edu
2. Click “Log In” in the top right corner of the webpage.
3. Click the top button that says “UMW Net ID and Password” if you are a student, employee, or recent alumni, or “Community Members” if you don’t have a UMW log-in.
4. Enter your UMW username and password. (UMW students: You automatically have a Campus Rec account once your UMW email is set up.)
5. Once you’re logged in, in the top right corner, click your username.
6. Click “Profile”.
7. Along the left menu, click “Programs”. Here you will see your current and past class registrations.
8. Next to the upcoming class you are registered for, click the button that says “Cancel.”
You are all done! Thank you for opening up a spot for another patron!
