Graduation Cords

If you are interested in receiving a graduation cord, please complete the following steps:

  1. Determine which graduation cord you are eligible for;
  2. Go to the designated department to receive your ticket in April;
  3. Take the ticket issued to the bookstore to purchase your cord. Cords are approximately $10 each.

NOTE: The Athletics Department purchases cords for qualified students. Members of the SGA Executive Cabinet and other students elected via campus-wide election will receive a blue and gray cord at the Transition Ceremony.

Recipient Cord Criteria
Athletics (Grey) Varsity Athlete Graduating Seniors who are on a roster of student-athletes on a varsity team.
Campus Recreation Sport Club (Red) Club Athlete Documented active membership for minimum of one year on a Campus Rec sponsored club athletic team. Tickets can be picked up at the Fitness Center
James Farmer Multicultural Center (Purple) Anyone Documented active membership and effective leadership (e.g., assisted in the planning and implementing of multicultural/diversity and social justice educational programs) for a minimum of one year in a JFMC-sponsored student organization with a current roster on file in MyUMW or with a JFMC-sponsored diversity or social justice initiative.   Tickets can be picked up at the JFMC.
Leadership (Green) Student Club Leader/Student Employees Holds a position of leadership either in on-campus employment (ie. coordinator, manager, supervisor, Orientation Leader, Resident Assistant, etc.) or a student club (ie. executive board officer). Tickets can be picked up in SAE.
Service (Light Blue) Anyone

Students who complete at least 30 hours of community service are eligible to receive the Community Service graduation cord. A student must complete at least 30 hours of community service in the greater Fredericksburg region or on UMW sponsored trips while enrolled as a full-time or part-time student.

To apply for the Community Service cord for graduation, complete the Service Cord application form. If possible, please upload documentation (or refer to your service hours in MyUMW, which are logged when you participate in on-campus service activities). Questions? Campus/Club Involvement (Orange) Anyone Documented active membership for minimum one year in an ICA-recognized organization or club with a current roster on file in MyUMW or student employee in an on-campus position. Tickets can be picked up in SAE.
Veterans (Intertwined:Red, White & Blue) Veterans Veteran status confirmed with the University (student declared veteran status on the university application or is using GI Bill benefits). Student picks up cord at the Bookstore after showing proof of identification. Stop by the Off-Campus Student Support Office located on the 3rd floor of the University Center for more information.
