History of Brompton

Described as one of America’s most historic houses, Brompton is famous for being at the center of the Battle of Fredericksburg in 1862 and for serving as a Union hospital during the Battle of the Wilderness in 1864. One grand old oak, a focus of Mathew Brady photographs, still survives. Throughout the years, Brompton and its grounds have undergone seasons of renovation and restoration, as historic homes such as these need mindful care and the talents of specialists. The home now serves as the official residence of the University president.
