Measles Update<\/h1><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/section>

Protect Yourself and Your Family<\/h2>

Measles cases have increased across the United States, with outbreaks reported in multiple states, including Virginia.<\/strong> Please visit the Virginia Department of Health (VDH) Measles Map<\/a> for the latest information on measles activity in Virginia.<\/p>

Measles is a highly contagious<\/em> viral illness that spreads through the air when an infected person coughs or sneezes. The virus can remain in the air for up to two hours after an infected person has left the area. Symptoms may include fever, cough, runny nose, red, watery eyes, and a rash.<\/p>

Measles is preventable with the safe and effective MMR (measles, mumps, and rubella) vaccine. One dose of the MMR vaccine is 93% effective<\/strong> at preventing measles, and two doses are 97% effective<\/strong>.<\/p>

If you plan to travel this summer or are concerned about your risk of measles, make sure you are up to date on your MMR vaccination. Talk with your healthcare provider or the Student Health Center if you have questions about your vaccination status.<\/p>

Where to get the MMR vaccinations<\/h3>

The MMR vaccine is available at most local pharmacies, including Giant, and other local community pharmacies.<\/p>

To make vaccination even more convenient, Giant Pharmacy will also offer MMR vaccinations on campus during Move-In Day and one day each month throughout the fall semester (September, October, and November).<\/p>

Based on this level of transmission, the CDC’s recommended action is to “Stay up to date with COVID-19 vaccines, including recommended booster doses. Maintain ventilation improvements. Avoid contact with people who have suspected or confirmed COVID-19. Follow recommendations for isolation if you have suspected or confirmed COVID-19. Follow the recommendations for what to do if you are exposed to someone with COVID-19. If you are at high risk of getting very sick, talk with a healthcare provider about additional prevention actions.”<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As the public health emergency for COVID-19 is scheduled to end on May 11, 2023, we will be archiving many of the pages of the UMW COVID website and reducing the frequency of our campus communications. You’ll hear from us when new resources or guidance is available or when there are significant updates from the CDC or an increase in our community levels.<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Student Health Center will continue to provide information and guidance on COVID and other respiratory illnesses, including reminders of proactive and precautionary measures, updates on quarantine and isolation instructions, and vaccine clinics in the fall. For students living on campus, we strongly recommend that those who can travel safely in a private vehicle conduct their period of isolation in their home. For all other residential students, UMW has identified isolation spaces in Marshall Hall, which will be made available at no additional cost to our residential students for the duration of their quarantine\/isolation period. We do not accept cash or credit cards, nor do we bill health insurance for any services.<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, because the SHC is limited in scope and cannot provide all your medical care, we strongly encourage, but do not require, all students to have health insurance coverage for laboratory testing, X-rays, emergency room visits, hospitalizations, and specialist visits. If you have coverage, please make sure that it can be used in the Fredericksburg area.<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For many years, UMW has sponsored a Student Health Insurance option providing affordable, short-term health insurance when other options were not available. With the passage of the Affordable Care Act, the insurance industry has changed.<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Options:<\/h3><ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li> You can enroll\/continue on your parent’s health insurance plan until age 26.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li> You can access coverage through the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthcare.gov\/marketplace\/b\/welcome\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Health Insurance Marketplace<\/a> (i.e., the Public Exchange) and may qualify for a subsidy offered through the Federal Government. American Exchange can assist you with enrolling in the Health Insurance Marketplace and in obtaining any subsidy for which you are eligible.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li> Another private health exchange with access to more than 300 health carriers is <a href=\"https:\/\/edusure.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Edusure<\/a> by Academic Health Plans.
