Her favorite thing to do is read young adult novels and watch movies. She is the program leader for Bigs in Schools. Her favorite COAR event is the Head Start Gift Box Drive.<\/p>\n

She enjoys spending her time playing in four of UMW’s music ensembles and helping out her local community. Jordan plans to attend graduate college for music therapy in order to work with Alzheimer’s patients. Her favorite COAR event is Good Neighbor Day.<\/p>\n

Kimberly Garcia<\/strong> is a senior double major in Sociology and Spanish with a minor in Practical Ethics. Kim is a co-leader for the Thurman Brisben Center program. She loves to volunteer her time to help a cause and is passionate about creating change in her community. In the future, she sees herself working with a non-profit organization that combats poverty and\/or social injustice. In her free time, she likes to hang out with her friends and watch Netflix. Kim studied abroad in Spain for the Spring 2018 semester.<\/p>\n

Eleni Riris<\/strong> is a double major in Linguistics and French. She loves learning languages and traveling, as well as doing calligraphy, listening to podcasts, and playing soccer. She is the leader of the Refugee Resume Help program, where UMW student volunteers partner with Catholic Charities Migration and Refugee Services to provide career counseling and job application\/resume help to clients (adult refugees). In addition to leading Refugee Resume Help, she also tutors refugee children in English,\u00a0tutors French, and\u00a0plays on the UMW club soccer team. She has one brother and one sister, and she is Greek-American.<\/div>\n

Daniel Hur<\/strong> is a sophomore double majoring in Anthropology and English. Daniel is the leader of
\nthe Fredericksburg Food Bank. His hobbies include reading books and crafting stories on paper.
\nHe loves volunteering because he desires to be an effect on the issues of the surrounding world.
\nIn the future he hopes to become a magazine writer for National Geographic. His favorite COAR

During the winter, Paige enjoys snowboarding, but in warmer weather she goes for bike rides through Fredericksburg. Her favorite annual COAR event is the Head Start Wrapping Party.<\/p>\n

This is also the way COAR tracks participation.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Eagle Vision:<\/strong> This outlet is for advertising on the screens located in campus buildings, including academic buildings and residence halls. The form to submit an event to the SAE Weekly News is found at this\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/saeweeklynews.umwblogs.org\/submit-to-the-weekly\/\">link<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>SAE Sandwich Boards:<\/strong>\u00a0When you create your event in MyUMW, you may request sandwich boards from SAE. These are best for advertising large events.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Flyers:<\/strong> You may post flyers on any bulletin board on campus as long as they are approved by SAE. Bring a few of your flyers into the SAE office to be stamped. Most programs pick up volunteers at the bell tower or the University Center. Check with the leader of the program you are interested in to find out exact pickup times and locations.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><b>Program Leaders:\u00a0<\/b><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\">In order to provide transportation for your volunteers, council leaders are required to be van certified. More information about\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/adminfinance.umw.edu\/parking\/student-driver-training\/\">student van familiarization<\/a>\u00a0can be found through UMW Parking Management. The form you will need to fill out is at\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/adminfinance.umw.edu\/parking\/student-driver-training\/testing\/\">this link<\/a>. If you are not yet van certified, ask a COAR staff member to help you with this process during your office hour.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">If you are already van certified, you will need to request vans from Facilities Services or COAR (if you are using the COAR minivan). This should be done at the end of each semester so that the COAR graduate assistant can do the van requests during the break between semesters. This will ensure that you have vans reserved at the beginning of each semester.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Please read the entire page before continuing to the COAR Van Request form at the bottom. It is important to understand the\u00a0restrictions\u00a0and requirements before requesting the vehicle.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2 class=\"p1\"><b>COAR Minivan<\/b><\/h2>\n<p class=\"p1\">COAR has its own minivan for use by COAR staff and council. Other campus groups can also request use of the van when it is not being used for COAR purposes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><span class=\"s2\">The van is a silver Honda Odyssey minivan. It is parked in the<\/span><span class=\"s1\">\u00a0Seacobeck Hall Loading Dock. The van has a dedicated parking space marked with a blue placard that says \u201cOSACS Van.”<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><b>Who can drive the minivan:<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">In order to use the COAR minivan, all student drivers must have gone through van familiarization through Parking Management or made other arrangements with the Director of Service to be trained. UMW employees do not require training. All drivers must possess a valid driver\u2019s license. All drivers are insured by the UMW insurance policy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><b>How to reserve the minivan:<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">COAR Council can request the minivan through COAR staff. All other uses should go through the Director of Service. Please request at least 3 business days in advance.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><i>Preference is given in the following order:<br>\n<\/i>-COAR programs<br>\n-Office of Community Engagement programs, events, and meetings<br>\n-All other university uses on a first-come, first-served basis<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><b>How to pick up the minivan:<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">After you reserve the minivan for a specific day and time, you will be contacted with information to pick up the keys. Keys are located at the Office of Community Engagement (Suite 320 in the University Center). The vehicle will be in its designated spot unless other arrangements have been made.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><b>How to fill up the minivan with gas:<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">If you are low on gas during business hours (9 AM to 5 PM – Monday through Friday, please fill up the van at Facilities Services. Facilities Services is located behind the Battlegrounds Athletic Fields off of Hanover Street. They have their own gas pump and gas is provided at no charge to your program. Check in at the front office for the key to the padlock that is on the pump. Drive around to the back of the building into the fenced in area. The pump is located in the far left corner. Unlock the padlock at the pump and fill up the tank. Relock the padlock and return the key to the front office.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">If you need gas while away from UMW, please refer the Voyager card packet in the glove compartment. There is a card you can charge gas to as well as instructions on which stations you can purchase from. Here is a story that exemplifies the impact that service can have on others:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">Starfish Story<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">A young man is walking beside the ocean and sees thousands and thousands of starfish that have washed ashore. Further along, he sees an old man, walking slowly and stooping often, picking up one starfish after another and tossing each one gently into the ocean.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">\u201cWhy are you throwing starfish into the ocean?\u201d he asks.<a href=\"http:\/\/students.umw.edu\/coar\/files\/2013\/08\/starfish.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-1287 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/students.umw.edu\/coar\/files\/2013\/08\/starfish.jpg\" alt=\"starfish\" width=\"197\" height=\"250\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">\u201cBecause the sun is up and the tide is going out and if I don\u2019t throw them further in, they will die.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">\u201cBut, old man, don\u2019t you realize there are miles and miles of beach and starfish all along it! You can\u2019t possibly save them all; you can\u2019t even save one tenth of them. In fact, even if you work all day, your efforts won\u2019t make any difference at all.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">The old man listened calmly and then bent down to pick up another starfish and threw it into the sea. \u201cIt made a difference to that one.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><em>-Author Unknown<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>COAR’s mission is to inspire students to serve their community. Past projects have included building with Habitat for Humanity, yard work for the Fredericksburg community, walking dogs at the SPCA, making meals for the homeless shelter, doing crafts with the elderly at a local retirement facility, and helping out with Friends of the Rappahannock.<\/p>\n<h2>Pumpkin Palooza<\/h2>\n<p>Every year on a Sunday towards the end of October, COAR provides local children with a safe place to trick-or-treat in groups on campus. Themed games, crafts, snacks, and costumes make for a fun way to spend an autumn day! Mary Washington students are invited to help with trick-or-treating, games, and crafts.<\/p>\n<h2>Head Start Gift Box Drive<\/h2>\n<p>This is a campus and community-wide effort to provide preschoolers in Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania with toys, winter clothes, and hygiene products before the holiday season. Students wrap gift boxes at the annual wrapping party in November to prepare for the drive. Faculty, staff, and students check out the boxes to fill up with items such as storybooks, coloring books, crayons, hats, gloves, and small toys. Gift boxes are given out to Head Start students by our very own Dean Rucker as Santa!<\/p>\n<h2>Variety Show<\/h2>\n<p>The purpose of this event is to raise money for Alternative Service Break trips through Habitat for Humanity. COAR raffles and auctions a wide variety of donations from local and national donors, including major league sports teams, gift cards, Fredericksburg restaurants, local wineries, and UMW academic departments. Student dance and musical groups provide entertainment during the event.<\/p>\n<h2>Good Neighbor Day<\/h2>\n<p>This day is a great way to strengthen and encourage the relationship between students and members of the community. COAR does this by sending students to the homes in the College Heights and College Terrace neighborhoods to do outdoor service projects, such as gardening, painting, raking, and mulching. After the morning of service, there is a free barbecue on Ball Circle for the students and community members.<\/p>\n<h2>Spring Forward Festival<\/h2>\n<p>Held on the Sunday before Easter, local children and their families are invited to spend the afternoon on the lawn of Brompton, a few blocks from the UMW campus. At the event, there are spring crafts, games, and egg hunts. Student volunteers help with all of these aspects. This year’s locations will be announced\u00a0 by November.
