Public Sociology<\/strong> provides an opportunity for students to bring the \u201csociological imagination\u201d to bear on questions facing our communities. During the semester students work in small groups to address research questions posed by a variety of community partners. Each group devises a research strategy, applies for research approval through the Institutional Review Board, conducts the necessary research, and presents their findings to their community partner at the end of the semester. We do this work without forgetting the unique perspectives that sociologists bring to research: keeping questions of power and inequality in mind, for instance, as we work through the issues posed by our partners.<\/p>\n

Recent community partners have included: Central Rappahannock Regional Library, City of Fredericksburg Planning Department, Loisann\u2019s Hope House, Fredericksburg All Ages, The Fredericksburg Food Bank and the Fredericksburg Regional Continuum of Care. Research topics have included public opinion about the agency, best practices for permanent housing of chronically homeless people, and community views on renters versus homeowners.<\/p>\n

\u201cI highly recommend this class to anyone who is eligible to take it. It was an great semester long project and working in groups definitely teaches you a lot and prepares you for working with others in the professional world after college.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cDr. Martin provided us with great opportunities to go out into the community and attempt to help make positive change. I personally believe this is the best way to learn and gain skills, so I’d recommend the course.\u201d<\/p>\n

Topics covered in lectures include models of developmental psychology, middle childhood development, maternal incarceration, the impact of poverty on development in children, risk and resilience, and managing problem behaviors. Mary Washington, President Troy Paino highlighted our value of <span class=\"highlight selected\">service, <\/span>community and civic engagement, drawn from our long history as a public liberal arts and sciences institution. President Paino argued passionately about the institution’s ability to “provide an increasingly diverse population with the opportunity to improve their lives, their communities, and the world around them” and to equip students to “address society\u2019s demands, to challenge injustices, and to embrace the world\u2019s possibilities.” Similarly, the 2020 Strategic Plan emphasized our strong ethic of public service and supports the development of more <span class=\"highlight selected\">service<\/span> learning courses.<\/p>\n<p class=\"textbox\" dir=\"ltr\">A Community Engagement task force, consisting of faculty and staff from the entire university, has spent a year planning a way for UMW to enhance our already strong connection between service courses and the community. Fun facts: Kiele is extremely athletic and her favorite things to do are row, show jump with horses and hike- she loves being outdoors. She’s\u00a0an adrenaline addict and has gone skydiving in addition to other fun stuff- bungee jumping is next on the list! Erynn loves that ASB is also an opportunity to go somewhere you may not have been with people you may not know. As well as being a leader for ASB, Jenna is the Vice-President of the Habitat for Humanity club, a Co-Director for BellACappella, and a member of Kappa Delta Pi, the Education Honor Society. She has been involved with Alternative Service Break since she was a freshman and has served in Palm Bay, FL, Fort Lauderdale, FL, and Casselberry, FL so far! She is from Greenwich, CT, but has loved living in Fredericksburg and all the fun activities it offers. On campus, she is involved in the Ultimate Women\u2019s Frisbee Club, Historic Preservation Club, Habitat for Humanity, and ASB. Last spring, she had the opportunity to go on her first ASB trip to Casselberry, FL and it was such a great experience. Since this experience was so fulfilling, she applied to be an ASB leader for the spring 2018 trip and cannot wait. Hour served as part of an academic requirement or judicial sanction do not count towards this cord.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\">To check your involvement hours, please go to OrgSync and click your picture at the top right hand corner. Scroll down to the Involvement tab and click on it, this is where your hours will be located. Total your service hours separately from any other event attendance.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\">If you notice that you are missing service hours you completed, or you completed service outside of UMW programs but still in the Fredericksburg community, you may add these hours in manually.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\"><strong>All hours must be logged in OrgSync and the form must be completed by April 23rd. Tickets to go to the bookstore and purchase your grad cord will be available beginning April 16th.
