During the semester students work in small groups to address research questions posed by a variety of community partners. Each group devises a research strategy, applies for research approval through the Institutional Review Board, conducts the necessary research, and presents their findings to their community partner at the end of the semester. We do this work without forgetting the unique perspectives that sociologists bring to research: keeping questions of power and inequality in mind, for instance, as we work through the issues posed by our partners.<\/p>\n<p>Recent community partners have included: Central Rappahannock Regional Library, City of Fredericksburg Planning Department, Loisann\u2019s Hope House, Fredericksburg All Ages, The Fredericksburg Food Bank and the Fredericksburg Regional Continuum of Care. It was an great semester long project and working in groups definitely teaches you a lot and prepares you for working with others in the professional world after college.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDr. Martin provided us with great opportunities to go out into the community and attempt to help make positive change. Topics covered in lectures include models of developmental psychology, middle childhood development, maternal incarceration, the impact of poverty on development in children, risk and resilience, and managing problem behaviors. Mary Washington, President Troy Paino highlighted our value of <span class=\"highlight selected\">service, <\/span>community and civic engagement, drawn from our long history as a public liberal arts and sciences institution. President Paino argued passionately about the institution&#8217;s ability to &#8220;provide an increasingly diverse population with the opportunity to improve their lives, their communities, and the world around them&#8221; and to equip students to &#8220;address society\u2019s demands, to challenge injustices, and to embrace the world\u2019s possibilities.&#8221; Similarly, the 2020 Strategic Plan emphasized our strong ethic of public service and supports the development of more <span class=\"highlight selected\">service<\/span> learning courses.<\/p>\n<p class=\"textbox\" dir=\"ltr\">A Community Engagement task force, consisting of faculty and staff from the entire university, has spent a year planning a way for UMW to enhance our already strong connection between service courses and the community. This will be her third year of participating in Habitat with Mary Washington and her first year leading! Fun facts: Kiele is extremely athletic and her favorite things to do are row, show jump with horses and hike- she loves being outdoors. She&#8217;s\u00a0an adrenaline addict and has gone skydiving in addition to other fun stuff- bungee jumping is next on the list! She has been on five Alternative Service Break trips, and this will be her third time leading the May trip. She loves working with Habitat because you physically see the benefits of your work! Hour served as part of an academic requirement or judicial sanction do not count towards this cord.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\">To check your involvement hours, please go to OrgSync and click your picture at the top right hand corner. Scroll down to the Involvement tab and click on it, this is where your hours will be located.
