Information for Current
Preservation Club Members
This page contains information about upcoming events, meeting times,
committee reports, minutes from past meetings. It will be updated
regularly and should be the place you check for the most up to date informtation
about Preservation Club activities and events.
March 2006:
Victorian Ball: We had a successful and fun Victorian Ball.
We made $650 dollars and it was well attended. The pictures of the
event will be made available soon.
Spring Event: The event has been moved to the week of April
17-21. It is going to be a weeklong celebration of Preservation.
We will have:
Monday: a movie night, probably showing National Treasure
Tuesday: historic games in Ball Circle
Wednesday: a living history day of Civil War, other wars
Thursday: Ice Cream Social to meet and greet new majors and old
Friday: Future of Preservation Lectures with various professionals,
locals, students, also show anti-Walmart Movie.
Sally is the coordinator of this event; please email her at sstep2md@umw.edu if you would like to
help.
We had two guest speakers:
Kate Egner spoke about the Confederate Lunette located beside Combs Hall.
She is getting together a committee to help put a historic site marker at
the location to tell the public what the large mound is. A sign costs
$1300. She also mentioned acquiring an artillery piece to put there,
possibly another for in front of Monroe, and getting financial assistance
from the Centennial Committee, Historic Preservation Alumni, and other sources.
Morgan is on the Centennial Committee and is bringing up the issue at the
next meeting. Email Kate at
kegne0lr@umw.edu if you are interested in helping out with this project.
Drew Gruber spoke about two important issues. He spoke about the Lee
Hall renovation and the fact that Lee Hall Ballroom will be virtually destroyed.
The plan is to split it into office spaces, leaving the ceiling intact.
He wants to write a letter of concern to the new President of the University
and have as many students and faculty, as well as other departments, contribute.
As the Preservation Club, it is important for us to take action against this.
Secondly, he spoke of the upcoming renovation of Monroe Hall. Many
things in the building are important and worth saving: the clocks,
murals, door handles, wooden floors etc. He wants to get an inventory
of what is important in the next two weeks and write another letter of concern.
Drew was appointed the chair of this Campus Preservation Action Committee.
If you are interested in this important campaign, email him at dgruber@umw.edu.
Another reminder that we still have shot glasses for purchase. If you
would like one, please email the club.
Also, we are going to have club T-shirts this year. We need
design ideas, so if you have any please email the club with your design or
put it in the club mailbox by this Friday (March 31).

Spring Trip to Savannah
*To be eligible for the trip, you must have helped out at a fall event (Ghost
Walk, Van Tours) and a spring event (Victorian Ball, Spring Event).*
- The van will be leaving school on Thursday, March 30,
around 4 or 5 pm. It is a 9 hour drive, and the van will be going straight
through. In Savannah, students can take historic tours (at a discount!)
and explore the city, spend time together at group meals, but also have free
days to do whatever they want. The van will return to school on Sunday,
April 2. Other things to do include a visit to Tybee Island, the beach
there, and ghost tours of the city at night. However, there is a limit
of 8 people so be sure to sign up early. We will let you know when sign
up is available. If you have any questions, please email Frank at fmess4pl@umw.edu
Victorian Ball
- Victorian Ball is NEXT WEEKEND, February 25. If
you are interested in going, please visit http://students.umw.edu/~hispclub/VicBall2006.html

We will need lot of help, so be sure to be there!

up anywhere in the community. If you are going somewhere downtown or
in central park, please pick up a few and take them with you!!!!
Assembly Party: The party favor/dance card making party will
be on Thursday Feb. 23 in the conservation lab (in the basement of Combs,
the room behind the display case) at 7:00 pm. Please please please come
and help!
Opportunities to Study Abroad with Historic Preservation
There are several opportunities to study abroad with preservation.
- SUMMER OPPORTUNITIES: UMW now has two programs.
The first is the long-running Scotland Summer School with Prof. Morton.
You live and work in Scotland for 3-4 weeks during the summer months.
Fieldwork is done in the small fishing town of Cromarty and day trips take
you to historic areas such as Lock Ness, Inverness, Aberdeen, Edinburgh, and
Glasgow. It’s also worth 3 credits and is an elective within the department.
Although this year’s trip is already planned, be sure to look for it next
fall and ask Prof. Morton about it when he returns from sabbatical.
The second opportunity is new and starting just this year. It
is a summer school in Falmouth, Jamaica and works in conjunction with UVA
for transfer credit to UMW. Matt Webster, head of restoration
at Historic Kenmore and sometime adjunct professor, will be teaching and assisting
in the program. Students will be working hands-on to help restore these
wonderful buildings and sites that have fallen into disrepair. For
more information, visit www.falmouthjamaica.org
or contact Matt at webster@gwffoundation.org
The last opportunity is a year or semester abroad program in the beautiful
city of Bath, England. Advanced Studies in England, associated with
Oxford University, offers students a wide range of classes, but also has courses
and internships directed toward architectural history and museums. The
class “Triumph of Georgian Bath” counts as a Preservation Department elective,
and most other classes are transferable to other requirements in other departments
as well. Additionally, the program offers internships with area museums,
such as the Building of Bath Museum, which explores how the Georgian city
was built. If you are interested in this program, please visit
http://www.studyabroadbath.org/
**Also, representatives from the program will be on campus this coming
Tuesday, February 21st. They will be presenting a slideshow in Chandler
201 at 4:00pm. Be sure to be there, as it is a wonderful and life-changing
experience!**
Planning/Law Professor Candidates
-The final two candidates for the Planning/Law professorship will be visiting
campus NEXT WEEK!! The first, Eric Allison, will be visiting on Monday
Feb. 20th an dhis lecture will be held at 5 pm in Combs 139. He has
a Masters in City and Regional Planning as well as PhD in Urban Planning
from Columbia University. The last candidate, Mr. Stiefel, will be here
on Friday the 24th. We will send you the information regarding his
presentation ASAP. Please try to attend these lectures, as one of them
will be your future professor!!
NEEDED: A WEBMASTER! The club is in need of a webmaster for
the next acadmic year. It's actually quite easy and painless, and a
good way to get invovled in the club! If you are interested, email Amy
at amill4gn@umw.edu No former
experience is required! Will train!
Our next meeting will be on Monday March 1st at 5 pm in Combs 215.
We hope to see you there!
December 2005:
A big thanks to those of you who trudged through the snow and came to the
meeting. For the rest of you, here's what you missed:
Spring Conference: This year's spring conference is going to be more of
a campus fair. Past 'conference' type activities haven't been very successful
in getting the campus involved, so hopefully having something out in Ball
Circle will inform the school body of the Preservation club and department.
Sally needs people to help her get this thing going!! Firstly, if you have
any contacts with (relatively) local professionals who would be willing
to help us out (think reenactors, people who cook things over say an open
fire or something, people who can blacksmith for a demonstration....), please
pass those people along! We would like as many people involved as possible.
Just as important, we need people who will be willing to help plan and help
at the actual event. To get involved, or if you have contact or questions,
please contact either the club here or Sally Stephens at sstep2md@umw.edu
.
Victorian Ball: This is the other Spring event. The title of the event
is now officially "The Grand Mid-Winter Ball of 1867". We are in need of
people to help on the various committees here as well. They are: publicity,
ticket taking, Decorations and set-up, Refreshments, Party favors/Dance
Card people, and General support. Please email the club or Lauren Trice
at ltric9rf@umw.edu to sign up.
**REMEMBER, TO GO ON THE SPRING TRIP YOU MUST HELP OUT AT THESE EVENTS!**
Thanks for a great semester, and we'll see you all in the New Year! Good
luck with the rest of this semester!
GET INVOLVED!
- Spring Conference Volunteers
We are looking for Club members to help plan and organize our Spring
Event. Planning involves publications, publicity, registration,
catering, programming, and other duties. Contact Sally Stephens if you would like to
help out.
- Victorian Ball Volunteers
The Victorian Ball Committee needs members to help with advertisement,
research, costuming, photography, catering, etc. This was a huge
success last year due to the hard work of the committee members.
Contact Lauren Trice if you want to
volunteer.
***Don't
forget that participation in a spring event is a requirement for the
Spring trip!***
