At the University of Mary Washington, the Division of Student Affairs promotes students’ success, learning, and personal wellness as they explore the intersections of their college experience. In concert with the University’s liberal arts and sciences mission and values of inclusion, integrity, and leadership, we provide programs, resources, and educational opportunities that prepare students for engaged citizenship in a global society.
We seek to fulfill our mission in the following ways:
Achievement of the academic mission: We collaborate with one another and with faculty colleagues to support students’ ultimate goal: earning their UMW degree. Our work provides resources and learning complementary to the classroom that allow students to realize the outcomes of a liberal arts education, including intercultural knowledge, personal and social responsibility, and integrative and applied learning.
The learning experience: We bring to bear our own knowledge in work and interactions with students and colleagues in order to promote student success. We facilitate intellectual connections between classroom knowledge and experiences in the residence halls, in the surrounding Fredericksburg community, and across students’ college education. We will champion the institution’s honor system as integral to student development and to the history and culture of UMW.
Intercultural competency and inclusion: We recognize the great benefits of empathy, diversity, and learning about other cultures and seek to establish and strengthen ways in which to educate students about these advantages.
Engagement and campus culture: We seek to enrich students’ campus experience beyond the classroom, where they participate in a rich array of research, internship, leadership, artistic, recreational and community engagement activities. We will support ways in which students connect with one another to build friendships, have fun, and grow stronger as UMW Eagles.
Competitive athletics and the college experience: We respect and celebrate the academic success, leadership development, school spirit, and retention benefits engendered by the student-athlete experience.
Safety and security: We acknowledge and work to ensure that a safe and secure campus allows students to learn and live in an optimal educational environment.
Personal development and wellness: We help students develop critical skills for their lives, including personal integrity, community responsibility, and healthy habits of body and mind.
