Here’s An Example

Let’s say it’s one o’clock in the morning, you’re studying for an important Bio test and someone’s playing their stereo – LOUD! You’ve already been to that room once tonight to ask them to turn it down. So what can you do?

Find a Resident Assistant (RA) and let them know what’s going on. The RA will document the situation in something called an Incident Report. The Incident Report is given to the Assistant Director (AD) of your area, who reads it over and decides what violations of University policy, if any, may have occurred.

The AD then contacts the student with the loud stereo to let him or her know that an Incident Report was written, that there are judicial charges pending, and that a hearing is necessary to decide the student’s responsibility. Possible charges are listed in the Student Handbook. In this case, the charge might be “Failure to abide by quiet hours.” The AD informs the accused student about the charges, hearing options, and his or her judicial rights and responsibilities .

The accused student then chooses one of three options:

  1. A hearing with the AD
  2. A hearing with the JRB
  3. To accept responsibility for the violation and receive sanctions from the JRB, waiving his or her rights to a hearing
