Spring 2017 Groups:

Understanding Self and Others:

Group 1: TBD

Group 2: TBD

Our Understanding Self and Others groups are intended for full-time UMW students who wish to have a space to talk about any issues that are on their minds. Often these concerns are related to personal or family stress that has been placed upon the student. Understanding Self and Others groups allow people to grow, learn about their interpersonal style, and try new skills in a safe space before taking them into our everyday world.

LGBQT:

Day/Time: TBD

This is a group for members of the UMW sexual minority community, including those who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, pansexual, transgender or who are questioning their sexual orientation.  This group is designed to allow individuals to learn more about themselves and their interactions with others. In group, members will have the opportunity to share common struggles, gain support, and give and receive feedback in a safe environment. Issues covered in this group can span a range of topics. If interested, contact Melissa Palguta or another counselor at (540) 654-1053 for more information or to join the group.

Introduction to Mindfulness and Meditation Group:

Day/Time: TBD

This 6 to 8 session group is designed to introduce students to the practices and principles of mindfulness and meditation. Mindfulness is about paying attention, on purpose, in the present moment and without judgment. It is about learning how to live in the present moment without becoming lost in the memories of the past or preoccupied by concerns or projections of the future. The group is designed to educate students on how to understand and manage the psychological stressors of one’s life through a mindfulness lens. The sessions will incorporate several mindful exercises hoping to invoke insight and awareness as well as meditation practices, such as: Deep breathing, sitting meditation, the body scan, guided imagery and mindful walking and eating.

Veteran’s Support Group:

Day/Time: TBD

This group is open to all UMW student Veterans, Active duty, separated and retired members of the Armed forces. This group’s focus is to assist student veterans with re-acclimating and reintegrating back into the civilian world. Members will have a safe space to discuss their challenges and process their concerns. If you are interested in the group, please contact Catherine Smith or one of the other counselors on 540-654-1053 for additional information or to join the group.

Sexual Assault Survivor’s Group:

Day/Time: TBD

This weekly support group is for UMW students who have experienced sexual assault/abuse and are ready to explore their personal healing process, find hope and empower themselves through support and collaboration. Group members have a chance to learn new coping skills, connect with other survivors and share their survivor experience(s) within this safe space, but group members are not required or compelled to share before they are ready. For more information about this group, please contact the Talley Center staff at 540-654-1053.

Life/Social Skills Group:

This group focuses on the ABCs of social skills for UMW students who experience difficulties with expressive communication and social interaction. This group focuses on improving communication, learning more effective ways of handling peer pressure, dealing with conflict, learning better problem-solving and decision-making skills, exploring issues related to self-image, helping connect with peers and learning more effective ways of handling stress in college and social situations.
