Canine Companions for Independence

Canine Companions for Independence at UMW (CCI@UMW) is a brand new club on campus that raises puppies to become service dogs for CCI. The puppies are raised for nearly a year and a half by volunteer puppy raisers.

The focus of the club is to raise awareness of service animals as well as supporting the program through trained/qualified puppy sitters and full time raisers. The puppy raising portion of the club was approved by the university’s President’s cabinet in May of 2014 and allows for the puppies to go to classes, attend university events, live in residence halls with the puppy raiser, and enter university buildings.
