UMW Campus Recreation is seeking students who want to get more involved with the University and who love the great outdoors. UMW Outdoor Recreation Trip Leaders are UMW students who volunteer their time to help lead trips for their peers.
Outdoor Recreation Trip Leaders will be able to take on a leadership role with the University in a unique way. This position will allow you to experience the great outdoors while enhancing your leadership and communication skills at the same time. You will learn how to manage groups of your peers and educate them on sustainable practices while enjoying the outdoors. Please understand that while this is a volunteer position, you will be able to participate in the outdoors trips for free and you will have access to the outdoor equipment rental center. Furthermore, there is the opportunity to be hired for a paid position in the future.
Trip Leaders will be responsible for the well-being of all students that participate on trips. General outdoor knowledge and first aid certifications are preferred but not required.
Trip Leaders are not expected to lead trips by themselves; ideally, there will be at least two Trip Leaders per event. Most events involve about 8-15 student participants but trip sizes can vary.
UMW Outdoor Recreation plans a variety of trips including one-day hikes, backpacking trips, canoe/kayak trips, indoor rock climbing, white water rafting, and more. We are always open to suggestions for more trip ideas!
