April is a UMW student double majoring in English and Psychology. She found yoga in 2011 when exploring ways to combat scoliosis. Yoga has helped her through chronic pain induced by scoliosis and Ehlers Danlos Syndrome. In 2015 she received her 200 hour Yoga Teacher training from Hot Yoga and Massage Studio in Newport News. Since then has been teaching many different styles but overall placing great value on breath work, good posture, and getting into a meditative mindset. She received her Master Level in Reiki in July 2017 to further her understanding of energy work. Outside of Yoga April writes fiction with a focus on horror and plays strategy based games.
Arielle is a UMW english and education student set to graduate in 2018 from Fairfax, Virginia! In addition to taking classes, she is involved in the UMW dance team and performing arts club. Arielle’s favorite workout is zumba and high energy dance classes, which is why she decided to start teaching them at Mary Wash. She loves group fitness classes and recommends them to other UMW students and staff because they’re a motivating way to sweat it out and a great way to make friends!
Bill took his first yoga class while in college and has found the practice to bring joy, vitality, and contentment to his life. He received his yoga training (RYT 200) through the Integral Yoga Academy and has been teaching for several years. Bill’s classes are informed by his philosophy that the body is designed to be used, not abused. He guides his students to relate to their yoga practice with awareness and kindness. Bill is also a certified meditation teacher through the Meditation Teacher Training Institute. Bill joined the UMW Campus Recreation group exercise staff during the fall of 2012.
Brittanie is a zumba, cycle, Eagle Fit and strength instructor at UMW. She went to Virginia Tech for both her undergraduate and graduate degrees and now serves as the Assistant Director of Campus Recreation for Fitness and Wellness at UMW. Brittanie has a passion for providing a fun and memorable class experience and building relationships with her participants. If you’re taking one of her classes, you’re guaranteed a sweaty workout to great, upbeat music that will keep you pumped up the entire time!
Colleen is a 2008 (BS) and 2012 (MBA) UMW Alum and is excited to share PITAIYO, PITAIYO Circuit, and Cycle with the UMW community. Colleen works for the Federal Government for her “day job” and in her free time enjoys swimming, biking, kayaking, and hanging out with her two shih tzus.
Danielle graduated from UMW in May 2016 with a degree in French. She began teaching cycle this past spring, and this fall, she added another class to her repertoire, Dumbbell Blast. One of her favorite workouts is a kettlebell circuit. When not at the gym, you can find Danielle spending time with family, serving at her church, or sipping on a cup of coffee with friends.
Emily K. is a Communication major set to graduate with the class of 2019. In addition to teaching group fitness classes, she is a member of the UMW Dance Team and the UMW Performing Arts Club. Emily enjoys strength training and a great cardio workout. She loves working out to high energy music to make the workout fun and enjoyable!
Erin is a UMW alum and current graduate student pursuing her MBA. She first started taking pilates classes when she was 13 years old because of a back injury, and later got into high intensity classes. During her time as an undergrad at Mary Wash, Erin became a Pilates and cycle instructor and thrives on creating a personalized workout experience for each of her participants.
Jenna is a senior biology major at UMW. You can find her leading a great Core + More class or HIIT classes for those who love to sweat! Jenna loves all workouts, but especially upper body exercises, lunges, and all plank variations. She is a member of the Women’s Club Soccer team and also serves as the Fitness Center Student Administrator for Campus Recreation. A few fun facts about Jenna: she lives on a farm and plans to go to vet school after graduating from UMW.
Kelly M. is double majoring in anthropology and computer science and will be graduating in 2018. She has always been active, from swimming to more recently enjoying all the fitness classes UMW has to offer! As a cardio kickboxing instructor, Kelly enjoys creating a fun, active environment for the UMW community!
Lauren first tried a Zumba class at Lord Fairfax Community College and fell in love with the high energy moves and Latin rhythms. Two years later, she became certified in Basic Zumba in Richmond, VA under April Smith, and then went on to be certified in Basic Zumba II, Zumba Sentao and Zumba Step. Lauren enjoys choreographing and teaching as a way to let loose and strives to make each class a fun and exhilarating workout experience for all those who attend. In her free time, Lauren plays the fiddle in a Celtic band, reads, and enjoys taking Pilates, yoga, step fitness and high intensity interval training (HIIT). She invites everyone to come out and join the Zumba party!
Leslie has been teaching group fitness since 2006 and is certified through AFAA. She loves teaching core, strength, and cardio classes – all with a focus on better preparing her participants for day-to-day life. Leslie’s family moved to Fredericksburg in 2015, and she has really enjoyed getting to work with the UMW community.
Maddie is a UMW student who fell in love with group fitness through yoga. She has been doing yoga as long as she can remember (she was in the newspaper doing butterfly pose at age 6)! After taking yoga classes for so long, Maddie branched out and fell in love with taking other formats. You can find Maddie in the dance studios teaching yoga, strength, and barre classes.
Nancy has several years of experience working in the fitness industry as a trainer and instructor in various fitness centers throughout the country and overseas. She grew up in the San Francisco Bay area, attended the University of San Francisco, and then served a tour in the United States Air Force. In addition to balancing family and career, she is an avid runner and holds AFAA Personal Training Certification as well as Group Fitness, Indoor Cycle, and Aqua Aerobics Certifications. Nancy lives fitness every day and wants to share her love of fitness with others who have the same aspirations to work hard and become healthier and stronger.
Olivia is a junior from Bedford, NH pursuing her degree in Biology and Education with a minor in Neuroscience. Olivia loves being actively involved in the UMW community, which is why in addition to taking/teaching fitness classes she is a member of the UMW Equestrian team and a volunteer tour guide. Olivia’s passion for kickboxing started her freshman year when she attended the class regularly with her teammates where she fell in love with the upbeat music combined with a high energy workout. As an instructor, Olivia cannot wait to create an energetic atmosphere filled with exciting music and hopes to meet a lot of new faces eager to sweat!
Raam has been practicing yoga for over 20 years and has been a qualified instructor since 2009. He moved to Fredericksburg at the beginning of 2015 from the Integral Yoga Ashram where he was Director of Teacher Training Planning and Co-ordination and of the Teachers Association. He teaches Classical Yoga suitable for all levels from complete beginner to more advanced levels as well as classes and private sessions in yoga therapy, stress management, meditation and the psychology and philosophy of yoga found in the Yoga sutras. He loves to share the joy of yoga that has personally brought him so much physical relief, mental focus, and a sense of deep peace.
Rebekah first pursued yoga in 2006 when she was looking for ways to find relief for work-related stress that had developed into chronic neck and back pain. After only a few classes, she was surprised to experience a level of physical and emotional transformation that kept her returning for more. In 2010, Rebekah earned her 200-hour yoga teacher certification with Devalila Yoga in NJ and has been a Registered Yoga Teacher (RYT) with Yoga Alliance ever since. Acknowledging that no two bodies are alike, Rebekah encourages her students to practice mindfully and safely within the integrity of their own bodies, offering a variety of modifications and detailed alignment cues.
Tiffany is a classically trained dancer with nearly 20 years of dance, choreography and instruction experience. Moving to Fredericksburg in 2012, she brought her passion for dance and fitness with her and opened Dance Trance Fredericksburg. Four years later, Tiffany has closed the doors to her studio, choosing to get back to what she loves most: teaching and inspiring people to “Find what you love to do and do it!” A versatile instructor, Tiffany invites you to join her in her group fitness classes: POUND, CIZE Live, Urban Groove, Urban Flow and Urban Ballet!
Tricia is a senior at UMW studying communication. Not only is she an instructor for Campus Rec, but she is also a consultant at the Speaking Center on campus! Tricia began her yoga journey a couple of years ago and has learned a lot about what the practice has to offer everyone mentally and psychically. She loves to teach others what she has learned about yoga through her own practice. Tricia understands that all yogis are not created equal and that everyone is at different levels in their own practice, and that is what makes yoga so beautiful.
